Why use social media?
Think Instagram is just for angst-ridden teens? LinkedIn is just for job-hunters? Like it or not, social media is driving our culture and it's the result of the convergence of three phenomena:
1. This is where people are - 74% of online adults use social media. Facebook has over 2.27 billion active users with 65% logging in daily. The average user is connected to 250 friends. Instagram and Twitter have over 1 billion and 330 million users respectively.
2. The traditional sales pitch is dead - With the 24 hour news cycle and information pelting us from all directions, consumers have grown tired and immune to the constant noise of advertising that bombards us on a daily basis. Within social media forums, users have the ability to actively choose the people and businesses that can communicate with them rather than passively receiving a hackneyed sales pitch. By clicking a button, people are saying, "Yes, I am interested in hearing what you have to say. I will listen". Does it get any better than that?
3. You can't beat word of mouth - If someone you respect "likes" a product or service, it's an instant testimonial. You're much more likely to take the time to learn about, buy or use that product or service. If the internet is going to work for business, there has to be a high degree of trust. Social media provides built in advertising from the most trustworthy spokespeople of all, your friends and family.
